Remember when gardening was all about timing, tradition, and tried-and-true methods?

As a seasoned gardener, you’ve already mastered the basics of managing your garden throughout the seasons.

But lately, it feels like Mother Nature has rewritten the rulebook.

Your once-predictable garden is now showcasing the effects of climate change. Established shrubs are dying, perennials are losing their colours, and wind damage and scorched leaves tell the story of extreme weather. It's enough to make any gardener wonder if their trusty techniques are still up to the task.

Meet your Master Gardener

Roberta Pak

β€˜I breathe easier when I’m surrounded by trees’

As a third-generation gardener with 40 years of my hands in gardening gloves and a second-generation volunteer Master Gardener, I've witnessed climate change transform our gardens.

My gardening roots trace back to my grandmother’s sprawling Saskatchewan vegetable patch and the Okanagan orchards where I grew up. However, severe health diagnoses in my family led me to question the impact traditional gardening methods have on our well-being and the planet.

Now, I’m on a journey to understand how the changing climate and new research might reshape the way we garden – and how our gardens, in turn, can heal the planet.

Through gardening4wellness, I'm sharing this exploration with experienced gardeners, like you, and inviting you to join me in discovering sustainable practices that work for our evolving backyards.

Sustainable gardening is about nurturing your plants while caring for our planet. It means working with nature, conserving resources, and promoting biodiversity in your own backyard.

But it's more than just a set of practices.

It's a mindset shift that asks you to:

  • Release shame over past harmful gardening methods and embrace new techniques

  • Challenge traditional approaches and find a path forward rooted in scientific evidence

  • Become a steward of something even greater than your garden –  nature’s thriving connected pathways

With each sustainable choice in your garden, you're planting seeds of positive change that reach far beyond your fence line.
